The use of Garcinia cambogia, a common weight-loss supplement, may pose health risks to those who are taking certain antidepressants, a newly released case report suggests.
A year ago in Oregon, a 35-year-old woman who had previously been taking pure garcinia cambogia dr oz for a couple of months while also taking an antidepressant started stuttering and sweating profusely. Inside the e . r . of the local hospital, the medical staff noted the woman’s heart rate and hypertension were high, which she had also developed foot clonus, involuntary muscle spasms that can cause a person’s foot to flex.
The woman’s symptoms were manifestation of serotonin toxicity, a drug reaction that occurs when levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin are extremely high. After the woman was given medication for serotonin toxicity and spent a few days at the hospital, her symptoms subsided and she eventually recovered.
“I am unwilling to label it being a dangerous supplement, because until we notice a lot more than one case, we wish to make sure that this is really something that is going to occur,” said Dr. Robert Hendrickson, one from the authors in the case report.
However, previous studies on people and animals have shown that Garcinia cambogia may, indeed, increase serotonin levels. And taking the supplement in conjunction with antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which also cause serotonin levels to increase, can lead to serotonin toxicity, said Hendrickson, a toxicologist at the Department of Emergency Medicine of Oregon Health and Sciences University.
Hendrickson added that, in line with the animal and human data suggesting both SSRIs and Garcinia increase serotonin levels, he recommends that those people who are taking an SSRI not use dr oz cambogia, a minimum of until further scientific studies are done. “Not because I know that it will probably be dangerous, but since there is an opportunity could possibly be,” he said.
“If I had a member of family or a patient who was considering starting Garcinia plus they were on an SSRI, I might suggest that they don’t do it right now,” Hendrickson told Live Science.
Garcinia cambogia, also called tamarind, is actually a small, pumpkin-shaped fruit, and diet supplements made from it are touted for helping people lose weight. However, scientific study has thus far found only mixed results when examining whether or not the supplement really helps weight loss. And one study in rats suggested that very high doses of Garcinia may cause testicular atrophy, and toxicity.
The woman inside the case report had been previously diagnosed with serotonin toxicity while she was having a different sort of antidepressant. In those days, she had already been taking Garcinia for any month or two, but she didn’t tell the doctor who prescribed her antidepressant she had also been using the weight-loss supplement, Hendrickson said.
Therefore, her doctor attributed her first case of serotonin toxicity to her first antidepressant, and switched her to a different one. Then, she developed her second case of toxicity, for which Hendrickson saw her.
“The real question is whether this individual was uniquely prone to this issue, or if this sounds like a much bigger problem,” Hendrickson said. “And I suspect, within the next year or so, if this sounds like a larger problem – given the volume of people taking Garcinia – we will have if there are a lot more and more people with this toxicity.”
The researchers said they should not be absolutely positive that it was, indeed, using Garcinia that caused the patient to formulate serotonin toxicity. Another potential, but not as likely, trigger in the reaction, could have been the SSRI she was taking. Moreover, additionally it is entirely possible that while the supplement she was taking was defined as Garcinia, it may not have contained the supplement, but another substance, Hendrickson said.
“There is a major distinction between a pharmaceutical, just like a medication, as well as a supplement,” Hendrickson said. Medications are highly regulated. “Supplements, on the other hand, are completely unregulated,” he was quoted saying. Whereas people may be relatively confident that a bottle of medication has got the ingredients that it must be supposed to contain, a similar should not be said about supplements.
“There is not any regulatory agency that’s watching that says that you had to test it and prove there is Garcinia inside it,” Hendrickson said, adding that additionally there is currently not a way to test whether a certain pill really contains Garcinia or otherwise.
Previous studies have revealed that some supplements did not include the herbs or any other substances their bottles said they contained. Moreover, there have devypky32 been instances by which other substances sold as supplements contained pharmaceutical agents, Hendrickson said.
For instance, valerian root supplement pills that are sold being an herbal sleep aid have been discovered to contain valium, since it was cheaper for your pill manufacturer to make use of the drug than the herb, he explained.
However, most capsules dr oz recommended garcinia cambogia likely do include Garcinia, Hendrickson said. And because previous studies have shown that Garcinia results in a serotonin increase, it is quite likely that the also took place the case discussed from the study, they said.
