Although has become serving its gourmet sandwiches since 1983, it only made its approach to our area some time ago, with all the first DC location opening this past year. With fresh-baked bread, sliced-in-house meats, and handy delivery service, this has been well received.

Still, there are certain things to be weary of around this sub joint, says Alison Sonak, a registered dietitian operating out of Sterling, Virginia.

“I don’t think it’s an excellent place to choose lunch. It’s got a lot of high-fat and high-sodium choices, but that’s typical for a sub shop,” she says. “And the the size of portions are incredibly large, but that’s everywhere in your country.”

Take a look at her analysis to aid navigate the menu inside the healthiest way possible.


• Worst-J.J.B.L.T: With six slices of bacon as well as a hearty slathering of mayo, this sub offers 634 calories, 35 grams of fat, and 1,329 milligrams of sodium. “Because of your bacon, the saturated fat is high too,” Sonak says. “Although the Totally Tuna [sandwich] has more calories, a minimum of it offers the advantages of fish.”

Take care with processed meats, which are full of sodium and sometimes carry possibly damaging nitrates. She also recommends eating one half of your sandwiches. “If you’re still hungry, supplement along with other things. Try and get a hold of some fruit or vegetables,” she says.
